Happy New Year!

We said goodbye to a prosperous 2012 and a big “Welcome” to 2013. Our Celebrate Twice event was well attended. Many of our visitors and residents were able to take advantage of the free trolley service that we offered. This service shuttled patrons from Mexico Beach to Port St. Joe and back so they could celebrate the arrival of the New Year not once but TWICE... and we had another incident-free New Year’s Eve. And, for a second year, we were able to provide a fireworks show from our pier at midnight. If you weren’t able to join us, we hope you can make it next year.

Weddings on the Beach

Michael & Tina
In December we welcomed Michael and Tina to our beach for a beautiful seaside wedding. After having visited Mexico Beach several years ago, they elected to return from Indiana for their wedding. Congratulations, Mike and Tina!

Mexico Beach is the perfect place to say “I Do”! For more information on weddings or vow renewal ceremonies on the beach, visit mexicobeach.com.

Gumbo Festival
February 16
February is the month for our annual Gumbo Cook-Off at Sunset Park (next to the El Governor Motel). A number of great chefs bring their secret gumbo recipes to Mexico Beach to see who will win the blue ribbon. But, it’s not just gumbo they’re cooking up. We also welcome chefs with secret Brunswick stew recipes. In addition to the great gumbo and Brunswick stew, we’ll have sausages, BBQ sandwiches, soft drinks, beer and wine. This year, enjoy the live entertainment provided by Rockin’ Randall during the day. We start serving gumbo and refreshments at 10:00 a.m. and continue serving until we run out. It’s a great party—come join us!! And, as a reminder, all proceeds go to help pay for our Fourth of July Best Blast on the Beach fireworks show.

Biloxi Casino Trip
February 19
Our second trip to Biloxi leaves the morning of February 19; this will also be an overnight trip. Full details are on our website at www.mexicobeach.com

Snowbird Luncheon
Date TBA
We eagerly look forward to our Snowbird Luncheon in March; the festivities take place around the pool at the El Governor Motel. All food and drinks are compliments of the Mexico Beach Community Development Council, and we’ll also have live entertainment and door prizes.

We love our snowbirds and invite them all to join us. We haven’t set a date for this yet, but it will be in our next newsletter.

Recipe of the Month

SAVANNAH MUD PIE
What could be more Southern or more delicious than Savannah Mud Pie? Here’s a simple and mouthwatering recipe that will earn you rave reviews.

INGREDIENTS
1/2 package Nabisco Famous Chocolate Wafers crushed to make 1 1/4 cups of crumbs
1/2 stick butter, melted
1 quart coffee ice cream
1 1/2 cups fudge sauce
Garnish: whipped cream and sliced almonds or chopped pecans (optional)

DIRECTIONS
Mix butter and crumbs and press into 9-inch pie plate.
Put pie plate in freezer while allowing ice cream to soften enough to spread.
Spread ice cream on crust.
Freeze until firm.
Top with cold fudge sauce. (It helps to place sauce in freezer for a time to make spreading easier.)
Place pie in freezer until frozen.
When ready to serve, top with whipped cream and sliced almonds or chopped pecans, if you like.

Gambling Wisdom

Nobody has ever bet enough on the winning horse.

One of the worst things that can happen in life is to win a bet on a horse at an early age.

Gambling: the sure way of getting nothing for something.

Last year, people won more than one billion dollars playing poker in Las Vegas—and the casinos made twenty-seven billion just by being around those people.

No wife can endure a gambling husband—unless he’s a steady winner.

A gentleman is a man who will pay his gambling debts even when he knows he has been cheated.

If you’re not just a little scared when you enter a casino, you’re either very rich or haven’t studied the games enough.

A race track is a place where windows clean people. You will see three windows marked “Bet Here” and only one window that says “Pay Out.”

There is a very sure way to return from a casino with a small fortune: go there with a large fortune.
