Happy Birthday America!

Mexico Beach celebrated our nation’s birthday July 4 and it was wonderful. The weather wasn’t too cooperative but it didn’t stop our Best Blast on the Beach Celebration. The day started off with our annual Sandy Shoes 5K Run/Walk. The turnout was overwhelming with 380 participants! We’re happy to announce our race winners:

Men
1st: Dan Clark from Mexico Beach, FL
2nd: Rodney Wellmann from College Station, TX
3rd: Thomas Howell from Blountstown, FL

Women
1st: Kathy Wolski from Port St. Joe, FL
2nd: Dana Jackson from Statham, GA
3rd: April Wisdom from Mexico Beach, FL

Boys (14 and under)
1st: Harrison Wellmann from College Station, TX
2nd: Jacob Lacour from Port St. Joe, FL

Girls (14 and under)
1st: Holly Jones from New Concord, OH
2nd: Alli Hylton from Zanesville, OH

Unfortunately, we had to cancel the kids’ fishing tournament due to the weather. Our fireworks show had to be postponed until Friday, July 5, but it was spectacular and worth the wait! We had a lot of visitors over the holiday and they had a good time even with the rain.

Pictured above are Casey Keegan from Ft. Mill, SC, and Sam Brown from Dayton, OH.

We’re Buying Dinner!

Enjoy dinner for two on us! We’re proud of our great restaurants here in Mexico Beach, so this month we are giving away a chance to enjoy them. Up for grabs are one $50 gift certificate to Mango Marley’s (compliments of Southern Vacation Rentals) and one $50 gift certificate to The Fish House.

To enter, email [email protected] by July 31 and we’ll put your name in the hat. The winners will be announced in our August newsletter.

Meet Mexico Beach

This month we want to say “welcome back,” to Jim and Lynnette Wynn. As high school students from Bainbridge, GA, they met in Mexico Beach at the roller skating rink in 1958. Marine Corps service took them various places for a couple of years and then they eventually settled in Thomasville, GA. Since they met, they had not returned to Mexico Beach until this July, and they are planning to come back again. We’re glad you’re back, Jim and Lynette!

Mexico Beach Fishing Report

July
Ever wonder why Mexico Beach has such spectacular fishing? It’s no accident and the Mexico Beach Artificial Reef Association (MBARA) has spent over $1 million in grant money and donations to build one of the largest artificial reef systems in the Gulf of Mexico. These structures range from 3 miles to over 30 miles away from the canal in Mexico Beach and are accessible by almost any size boat. The MBARA invites the public to enjoy these sites, so visit www.mbara.org and discover these great reef systems and fishing spots.

Mexico Beach offers some of the best sport fishing in the world. For a complete list of charter services, marina info, and reef coordinates visit mexicobeach.com.

Wayne & Neil Ann
Wayne and Neil Ann came from Tennessee to tie the knot on our beach—and they brought their children along to celebrate this special day. It was a picture-perfect wedding and we offer them our congratulations!

Recipe of the Month

Matt & Leah’s Stuffed Flounder
We thank Matt Heyser and Leah Needer for sharing this delicious fish recipe from the Mexico Beach Artificial Reef Association cookbook.

INGREDIENTS
1 2-lb. flounder
1 lb. crabmeat (claw preferably)
1 egg
1 cup Italian bread crumbs
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
¼ cup mayonnaise
1 tsp. Old Bay seasoning
1 onion, chopped
Salt & pepper to taste
Butter

DIRECTIONS
Slightly sauté onion in butter. Mix in remaining ingredients (except flounder). Wash and dry flounder. Cut the flounder down the middle and away from the bone on both sides. Stuff the crabmeat mixture under each side of the fish and pile on top. Bake at 400° F for about 30 minutes or until brown. Enjoy!

Thoughts for the Month

Speak the truth, even if your voice shakes.

Quit your job. Buy a ticket. Get a tan. Fall in love. Never return.

It is not happy people who are thankful; it’s thankful people who are happy.

If there was a way to read a woman’s mind, I am not sure I would want to. I hate shoes, shopping, gossip, and I already know I’m annoying.

I hate people that say “He’s a nice person once you get to know him.” They might as well say “He’s a dork.”

You know something bad is about to happen when someone says “Hold my beer and watch this.”

When they discover the center of the universe, a lot of people will be disappointed they’re not it.

When a woman says “What?” it’s not because she didn’t hear you. She’s giving you a chance to change what you said.

We buy things we don’t need with money we don’t have to impress people we don’t like.

The only thing worse than “the one who got away” is the one who won’t go away.

Having one child makes you a parent; having two makes you a referee.

Laziness is nothing more than the habit of resting before you get tired.

Those who can’t laugh at themselves leave the job to others.
