Best Blast on the Beach Just Weeks Away!

July is just a few weeks away and, once again, we will have our Best Blast on the Beach here in Mexico Beach on July 4th. The celebration starts with our annual 5K Sandy Shoes Fun Run. The race starts at 7 a.m. at Under the Palms Park on 7th Street—just a few blocks from Highway 98. Register now at mexicobeach.com.

Our second event of the day is the Kids’ Fishing Tournament at Canal Park from 9:30 a.m. till 11:00 a.m. All anglers ages 2–14 are invited to participate in this free tournament. We will be serving free hot dogs, snacks, and beverages to all fishermen and their parents. Trophies and awards will be presented to the winners at the end of the tournament.

And, at 8:30 p.m., we will have our spectacular fireworks show from the pier. This is a not-to-be-missed event for everyone—both young and old.

All times are listed in central daylight time (CDT). For more event details, visit mexicobeach.com.

Meet Mexico Beach

This month, we want to introduce a new business that has come to Mexico Beach: High Tide Beach Service. High Tide Beach Service has set up shop, and they are ready to help make your trip to the beach more relaxing. They offer chair and umbrella service seven days a week. They will come and set up your chairs and umbrellas wherever you are and will bring them back daily if you are staying more than one day. Friendly staff and fast service, not to mention comfortable chairs! So, beat the heat and rest your legs with a rental from these guys! Give them a call at (850) 665-0270 and let them take care of your chair and umbrella needs.

And the Winner Is…

Last month, we decided to give away an autographed copy of the Images of America book, Mexico Beach, and a Mexico Beach shopping tote. The lucky winner was Chief Master Sergeant John Gibbons from Fort Smith, Arkansas. Congratulations, CMSgt. Gibbons! This month, we will be giving away one entry into the July 4 Sandy Shoes 5K Fun Run. This includes your race registration fee and a T-shirt! To put your name in the hat, simply e-mail Melissa and be sure to include your name and contact information. The winner will be announced in the July newsletter.

Mexico Beach Fishing Report

June

Fishermen along the Unforgettable Coast® are seeing red—red snapper, that is. The bottom of the Gulf of Mexico just offshore Mexico Beach has been brought to life over the last 17 years with artificial reefs that hold red snapper, and lots of big ones. Reef areas as close as five miles from the canal are accessible to almost any size boat and the reefs are public numbers. This year the red snapper season in Florida state waters, which extend nine miles out from the nearest land, is 54 days, lasting until July 14. Pictured is Jeff Isley of Columbia, South Carolina, with a snapper taken aboard FloriDaze Adventures. Jeff and Susan have taken week-long snapper fishing vacations in Mexico Beach for the last four years.

Mexico Beach offers some of the best sport fishing in the world. For a complete list of charter services, marina info, and reef coordinates visit mexicobeach.com.

Recipe of the Month

Baked Stuffed Snapper

It’s snapper season, so let’s take a look at a delicious way to prepare them. We thank the MBARA for sharing this delicious fish recipe from the Mexico Beach Artificial Reef Association cookbook.

INGREDIENTS
1 red snapper
2 cups hot cooked rice
1 can (4 oz.) sliced mushrooms
2 tbsp. chopped parsley
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. margarine (or butter) melted
1/2 cup diced water chestnuts
1/4 cup thinly sliced green onions
1/4 cup diced pimento
1 tbsp. shredded lemon peel
1/8 tsp. ground black pepper

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Clean and butterfly fish. Combine rice, mushrooms, water chestnuts, onions, pimento, parsley, lemon peel, salt, and pepper and toss lightly. Fill cavity of fish with rice mixture. Close with wooden toothpicks that have been soaked in water. Place fish in greased 13” x 9” baking pan or dish. Wrap any remaining rice in foil and bake in oven with fish. Bake 18–20 minutes or until fish flakes easily when tested with a fork. Serves four.

☆ The oldest signer of the declaration was Ben Franklin; he was 70. The youngest was Edward Rutledge at 26; he later became the governor of South Carolina.

☆ In 1870, it became an unpaid federal holiday and in 1938, Congress passed a bill to make it a paid holiday.

☆ President Dwight Eisenhower was well known for playing golf every Independence Day.

☆ Jackie Kennedy was known for wearing a bejeweled American flag in her lapel every Independence Day.

☆ Lou Gehrig appeared in Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939, and gave his retirement speech, calling himself “the luckiest man on earth.”
