Best Blast on the Beach
Our annual July 4th celebration is almost upon us. The celebration starts with our annual Sandy Shoes 5K Fun Run at Under the Palms Park at 7:00 a.m. Registration is now open and more information can be found on the Mexico Beach website.
After the fun run, it’s time for our second event—the Kids’ Fishing Tournament. All young anglers, ages 2–14, are invited to participate in this free tournament from 9:30 a.m. till 11:00 a.m. at the Canal Park. We had several hundred kids last year and it was a great family event. As usual, we’ll be serving free hot dogs, snacks and beverages to the young anglers and their parents. A tournament wouldn’t be complete without trophies for the winners and ribbons for all the anglers.
And, to top off our celebration, we will have a spectacular fireworks show—the Best Blast on the Beach—which will be shot off from the City Pier at 8:30 p.m. This is a must-see for everyone, and the show can be seen from everywhere in Mexico Beach.

Mexico Beach Fishing Report
June
Just a reminder to all our friends: not all fishing has to be done from a boat. Some of our best anglers fish off the shore and from the City Pier. Also, there is great fishing to be done via diving. Thanks to the Mexico Beach Artificial Reef Association (MBARA), we have over 160 reefs below the surface, all attracting wonderful schools of fish. Avid divers can enjoy just looking at the fish or catching them. Carol Cox and Brian Higdon managed to bag this nice Gulf flounder and this red snapper in the Tower Site area. For more information and updates to season dates, you can visit the Mexico Beach Marina or Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Mexico Beach offers some of the best sport fishing in the world. For a complete list of charter services, marina info, and reef coordinates visit mexicobeach.com.

Greek Red Snapper
Greek Red Snapper
We thank the Mexico Beach Artificial Reef Association for this delicious recipe!
INGREDIENTS
1 ½ to 2 pounds red snapper
2 cloves garlic
1 onion, chopped
1 cup pitted black olives
1 box cherry tomatoes
¼ to ½ pound feta cheese
Mayonnaise or olive oil
DIRECTIONS
Coat fish lightly with mayonnaise or olive oil and lay in a shallow baking dish. Put in a 350 degree oven to bake. While fish is cooking, sauté onion until translucent, then add garlic, tomatoes, and olives and cook until tomatoes collapse. Just before fish is done, top with crumbled feta and cook until cheese softens/melts. Top with veggies, serve and enjoy!

Send your best seafood recipe to Sally Childs, PO Box 13470, Mexico Beach, Florida 32410 or e-mail her. Sally works at Sundance Realty and was one of the authors of the original cookbook. Thoughts for the Month
Our firefighters have heavy responsibilities, which they take seriously. But, they also have a sense of humor. Here are a few of Murphy’s Laws that every firefighter knows—and they can be applied to other lines of work as well.
✯ If it’s a stupid idea that works, it’s not stupid.
✯ A fire that is moving toward you and due in about an hour will arrive in 30 minutes.
✯ When the Fire Commissioner calls, the fire is always under control.
✯ Portable radio batteries will fail at the precise moment you need help.
✯ You will always have more fire than you have water.
✯ Success forgives all sins.
✯ Your biggest save will have no witnesses.
✯ Your biggest mistake will have hundreds of witnesses.
✯ The person who contributes least to the firefighting efforts will be the only one interviewed on the six o’clock news.
✯ No matter how bad things get, it will look much worse on TV.
