The Month of Sky Painting!

October brings a new set of sky paintings, better known as sunsets, here to the beach. The colors are rich in pinks, oranges, purples, and yellow hues. It is one of the better times to be on the beach, with the majestic colors, and you can often have the beach all to yourself. Between watching your team on the big screen and running errands, sometimes you just need to pause and take in the small, joyful moments between the busy ones. Our sunsets offer some great views to help remind you to enjoy life and that it’s OK to slow down.

Christopher and Susan recently purchased the coffee shop and have started incorporating some new features, while ensuring that the beloved favorites will stay—including their cinnamon rolls! With new menu items and the option to order online coming soon, we’re excited to have Christoper and Susan at the helm of our favorite coffee shop and café here in Mexico Beach. Next time you need a fresh, hot cup of joe or something savory, stop in and say hello.

EASY SHRIMP AND CRAB PASTA

We publish it with the compliments of the Mexico Beach Artificial Reef Association cookbook (MBARA.org).

INGREDIENTS

8 oz angel hair pasta, cooked

6 oz can lump crabmeat, undrained

1/2 lb. shrimp, cooked and chopped

1 large onion, diced

4 cloves of garlic, pressed

2 Tbsp butter

1/2 tsp. oregano

1/2 tsp. basil

1 qt. half-and-half

1 1/2 Tbsp cornstarch

Red pepper flakes to taste

Salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS

Sauté the onion and garlic in butter until the onion is nearly translucent. Add oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, and salt and pepper. Add half-and-half and bring to a boil. Mix cornstarch with enough water to dilute it, and then pour it into the boiling sauce until you achieve the desired consistency. Then stir in the crab and shrimp. Cook for a minute or so, then remove from the heat. Spoon it over cooked angel hair pasta.

Serve and enjoy!

RUNNING

Here is some great wisdom about running and jogging. Enjoy!

Run like you stole something.

If the hill has a name, it’s going to be tough.

Marathon runners with bad shoes suffer the agony of de feet.

If God invented marathons to keep people from doing anything more stupid, the triathlon must have taken him completely by surprise.

Slow runners make fast runners look good.

Life is short. Running makes it seem longer. —Baron Hansen

We can’t all be heroes because someone has to sit on the curb and clap as they go by. —Will Rogers

I go running when I have to. Like when the ice cream truck is doing sixty. —Wendy Liebman

My doctor told me that jogging could add years to my life. I think he was right; I feel ten years older already. —Milton Berle

Running won’t solve all your problems. But then again, neither with housework.

GET SACKED

This saying is often associated with the understanding that occurs when someone is either let go or fired from their job. The origin is not too far from this meaning. In the 17th and 18th centuries, men and women would move from job to job, carrying their own supplies in a sack. They would often leave the sack with the employer; however, when they were fired, the employer would hand them their sack back, thus “getting the sack,” meaning they were out of a job, and would have to collect their tools and find employment elsewhere.
