Rainy Day Things to Do in Mexico Beach, Florida

As much as we would love sunshine 365 days a year, the sun needs to take a rest sometimes. When the days get gray, there are still plenty of fun things to do in Mexico Beach, Florida — and cloudy days always make the sunny ones shine a little brighter.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a longtime regular, a rainy day in Mexico Beach doesn’t have to slow you down. From local shops and community gems to cozy in-rental activities the whole family can enjoy, here are five easy ways to make the most of a gray Gulf Coast day.

1.) Local Shop Hop

Mexico Beach is proud to be a community of locally owned small businesses, and a rainy day is the perfect excuse to support them. Browse sweet shops stocked with treats and fun finds, or pick up a one-of-a-kind souvenir you won’t find anywhere else. From gifts to goodies, shopping local in Mexico Beach means every dollar goes right back into the community you’re falling in love with.

Local Tip:  Many shops are within easy walking distance of each other. Make it a slow stroll and let the kids lead the way, don’t worry there is a sidewalk along HWY 98 that is perfect for strolling.

2.) Visit The Mexico Beach Welcome Center

The Welcome Center is more than just a place to grab a map. Browse the Little Free Library and take home a book for your rainy afternoon read, send a postcard to a friend back home, and chat with a friendly local face who knows this town inside and out. You might just leave with a rainy day plan better than anything you could have googled.

Local Tip: Ask staff what’s happening around town. They always know about hidden gems and local events.

3.) Puzzle & Game Marathon

Here’s a local tip worth its weight in gold: pack a puzzle before you leave home and work on it a little each evening during your stay. When a rainy day hits, it’s ready and waiting. A deck of cards goes a long way too! War, Crazy Eights, Rummy, and Go Fish cover every age from 4 to 14 with zero setup. Many Mexico Beach vacation rentals also come stocked with board games and puzzles, so ask your rental management company what’s already in the home before you pack

Local Tip: Check the junk drawer. Most vacation homes have a worn deck of cards hiding in there.

4.) Shell Crafts at the Rental

If you have been collecting shells on the beach, a rainy afternoon is the perfect time to do something creative with them. Paint them, glue them into frames, arrange them into little scenes, the possibilities are endless. So, if the weather forecast isn’t looking great for your stay, make some room in your bags for just a few supplies.

Local Tip: Some of our local stores may have supplies that just might surprise you. So, look around to see what you can use for a craft.

5.) Indoor Scavenger Hunt

Sometimes the simplest games are the biggest hits. Hide the shells the kids have collected around the vacation home and let them search, or play a round of I Spy using everything around you. A few ideas to get you started:

    • I spy something that came from the Gulf
    • I spy something that reminds me of the beach
    • I spy something the color of the Gulf water
    • I spy something smaller than my hand
    • I spy something we brought from home

Local Tip: Let kids take the tuns being the “spy.” It keeps them engaged longer and builds confidence in little ones.
